Out of 455 students from 92 different schools across the country, Pia Beros, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Accountancy student at the ݮƵ (PUP) Sta. Mesa Campus, made the cut and was named one of the top 25 finalists in the 26th Search for Outstanding Accounting Students of the Philippines (SOASP).
Led by P&A Grant Thornton, in collaboration with the P&A Foundation, Inc., the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), and the Association of Certified Public Accountants in Commerce and Industry (ACPACI), the event recognizes and celebrates the outstanding performance of accounting students.
Beros was among six students nominated from ݮƵafter P&A Grant Thornton opened its call for nominations and emerged as the sole representative of the University to pass the qualifying round and advance.
The 26th SOASP: Beros’ Battle for Excellence The 26th SOASP consisted of two rounds to determine its winners. Beros, along with six other nominees from PUP, competed in the first round, an online nationwide qualifying exam. Beros ranked among the top 25 scorers, earning her a spot in the next round of the competition held at the Makati Diamond Residences.
Upon the announcement of the Top 25, Beros felt mixed emotions—grateful that she became that far, but also uneasy, as the final round of the competition fell during their exam week. She emphasized that the biggest challenge during the competition was not the competition itself, but the pressure of having many things to attend to.
While the competition was challenging and exhausting as it covered all accounting courses, Beros stated, it’s still the best contest she had ever participated in. Even though she couldn’t make it to the top five, she was more than happy to be included as a finalist and for the opportunity to represent PUP.
“Just try,” a lesson that Beros learned throughout the competition, stressing that if she didn’t try, this milestone would never happen, as she initially doubted whether to push through with the competition.
Started Unsure, Ended with Honor “First-year Pia definitely didn’t foresee what studying accountancy would really be like,” Beros recounted. Now a graduating student, she reflected on how studying this course had brought her both challenges and victories, growing tougher and wiser from these experiences.
Since first year, Beros has been a part of ݮƵJPIA (Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants) FINEST, giving her the opportunity to join various accounting contests whenever she could, pushing herself to be the best and leading her to be recognized as one of the outstanding accounting students.
“Being part of the special committee for quizzers in ݮƵJPIA Manila opened opportunities for me to compete in various quiz bees and case competitions, which eventually led to me becoming part of SOASP,” she said.
On what is next, Beros is now focused on overcoming the four waves of evaluation exams required for all graduating students and is determined to earn the title of CPA (Certified Public Accountant) soon. She then acknowledged how Sintang Paaralan’s contributions towards her development as she has taken every opportunity that the University has provided, shaping her knowledge as an individual.
Beros expressed her gratitude to the ݮƵand faculty members who nominated and supported her, the faculty members who nominated and supported her—particularly Assoc. Prof Noel A. Bergonia, Chairperson of the Department of Accountancy, and Asst. Prof. Mark Anecito R. Perlas of the same department. To her, becoming a finalist is more than just a personal achievement—it’s a continuation of PUP’s strong performance in the SOASP.
